St. Gauden's Metal Art

What happens when a fine jewelry designer - great-granddaughter of the sculptor of America's $20 Dollar Gold Piece, considered by many to be America's most beautiful coin - applies her remarkable talents to the creation of metal art tiles for the home?

The result is a collection of exquisite bronze tiles, created in the classic solid cast manner of fine coinage or jewelry. The effect, when placed as accents among traditional ceramic or marble tiles, is stunning. As one customer exclaimed, "They look like ancient ornaments, like classic jewelry for the home!"

The reference to classicism is apt. In her venture into the tile arts, designer Valerie Saint-Gaudens has chosen classical visual elements reminiscent of ancient lands: A wreath of carved acanthus leaves, a goddess surrounded by lotus and daisy-like asteriscus flowers. These tiles can take a floor or wall beyond the commonplace to the era of classical beauty when homes were fashioned of marble, fitted with bronze, and enhanced by fine sculpture. Valerie Saint-Gaudens has designed fine jewelry for nearly 30 years, winning awards and loyal clients with her gems set in expertly carved gold. In the tradition of her great-grandfather, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), she's applied a sculptor's mastery to create and add beauty to the most practical of mediums.
